An old Elm burr gave up this decorative live edge, non-functional bowl. Burrs are the areas of chaotic growth as a result of a tree's defensive response to a foreign object or infection, and are characterised by denser wood and bark inclusions, both seen in this piece. The random nature of the growth means that lip, of the bowl is always irregular - the live edge. The more chaotic the growth, the greater the variation in completeness of the lip, and the more bark inclusions show in the finished item.
